Explore 8 engaging pixel art symmetry designs that promote spatial awareness and coordinate grid understanding. This creative activity helps students develop math skills while enhancing their visual tracking abilities through coloring and artistic expression.
This is a great activity to get students to be creative with their math skills. Students will learn about symmetry and grid use, as well as strengthen their visual tracking and spatial awareness skills by coloring or creating the second half of the pixel picture. Some pictures have students fill in the missing left-hand side, and others fill in the right-hand side. Each picture comes in 1/2 picture, full picture, color, and black and white. Grid aids are included to help students identify the box they are working with and transfer it to the blank side to fill in.
Symmetry, Math, Art, and Spatial Awareness all come together in this fun activity for young elementary students. Not only does this teach the aforementioned skills, but it can also be used to introduce coordinate grids and how to find columns and rows. Graphing skills are a wonderful addition to the 2nd-4th-grade curriculum that covers arrays and coordinate grids.
Students will enjoy challenging their brains, hands, and eyes to locate and color the new squares to finish each picture. Some students may find this very challenging as they are teaching their brain to cross the hemispheres. Please be patient with these students as they may become frustrated. The letter and number grid strips may help them alleviate some of the visual stress associated with the grid pattern.
Alternatively, students can also just color the whole image in different styles and colors.
